Kisspeptin is a vital neuropeptide and hormone produced in the hypothalamus that regulates reproductive health and hormonal balance. It acts as the master trigger of the reproductive system by stimulating the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which in turn controls the production of testosterone and estrogen.
How Kisspeptin Works
Kisspeptin is encoded by the KISS1 gene and is secreted by specialized neurons in the brain.
The Pathway: It binds to the KISS1 receptor (KISS1R) on GnRH neurons. This binding stimulates the release of GnRH, which signals the pituitary gland to secrete luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
The HPG Axis: Because it sits at the very top of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, kisspeptin dictates reproductive processes ranging from the onset of puberty to fertility and ovulation
